Description
How to use this guide: This is a flexible unit study that can be tailored to your individual needs. It includes history lessons, books to read, videos to watch, vocabulary, discussion questions, games, crafts, and other activities.
You can user this PDF and just one other book to complete this study, but there are additional books listed that will make a well-rounded study for all ages!
- Option 1: Download to your favorite smart device, and use the instructions for daily learning, while having easy access to links within.
- Option 2: Print the entire unit, making extra copies of the activity sheets (journal, games, maps, etc.) for each child. Place all needed materials in a 3-ring binder.
- Option 3: Print and download, following the sample schedule.
AGES: You’ll find instructions and suggestions below for “older” and “younger” students. “Older” will refer to approximately 12 and up, or sometimes 14 and up. “Younger” will generally include elementary students. Of course, each child is unique, and some are obsessed with history or reading, while others may not be. These ages are simply a guide.
Anything noted for “younger” students is also completely appropriate for the entire family to do together. If you have children of all ages, consider the “younger” activities as a group, and add “older” recommendations for deeper study for teens.
It’s written for family-style study, so all ages are welcome to participate together. Read some of the books aloud, or assign books to your children based on their ages. Join together to make some of the crafts, watch a video or two, and search the globe for the locations mentioned. As you work your way through this study, consider adding a couple of new history-related traditions to your family’s Thanksgiving celebration!
SCHEDULE: This guide is very flexible for the homeschooling family! Whether you choose to do a full-time study for the month of November, or pick just few ideas from the list, it is easily adaptable. I’ve included a schedule that covers three or four weeks of fully immersive study, such as books, vocabulary, geography, videos, cooking, crafts, and family Thanksgiving traditions.
You may also choose to use this guide alongside your history curriculum, no matter what time of year! This story is both world history and American history, so use it as a deeper study the 17th century.
FOR HOMESCHOOL GROUPS: This unit study would also work well in a co-op setting for all ages. Make as many copies as you need!
