One of our favorite things to do in this family is read, and my kids love to get free goodies. So summer reading programs are a win-win for us! In fact, we are signing up today at our local library, where the kids will get a free Sonic ice cream, a free meal coupon at Chili’s, and tickets to Lego Land. Last summer my teenage daughter won a WalMart gift card in the teen summer reading program!
I have written all about North Texas summer reading programs over at DFW Magazine, including libraries, book stores, and how to set up your own program at home or in your neighborhood.
Many DFW bookstores offer free books to readers who meet specific goals.
- The Feed Your Brain Summer Reading Program at Half Price Books allows students from preschool to high school to earn Bookworm Bucks for reading 300 minutes. Thewebsite includes a printable log. Submissions are due by September 1.
- Barnes and Noble presents the Summer Reading Triathlon with “Opening Ceremonies” on Saturday, June 4 at all area locations. Students in 1st through 6th grade will win a free book upon completion of their reading journal. Submissions are due by September 6.
- Books-A-Million has a more limited version of the summer reading program. Children must choose and read three books from their Summer Reading Adventure section. After those books have been read, they win a James Patterson Middle School lunch bag.
Don’t see anything that fits your schedule or needs? How about creating a customized summer reading program for your family? Set your own goals and prizes for the summer, using a spreadsheet, a whiteboard, or punch cards. This excellent Frugal Living post on creating your own program has a list of great suggestions, complete with printables.
