I have heard of Reading Eggs, but had not tried it, so I was pleasantly surprised to see how comprehensive a program it really is! My 6-year-old daughter, Catie, is enjoying this daily addition to her routine. We were late getting started with the review process due to sickness and vacation, but now that we have resumed normal life, we are LOVING Reading Eggs!
Reading Eggs is designed for ages 3-7, and works on letter recognition, phonics rules, capital and lower case letters, sight words, and so much more through colorful and active online games. The entire program is digital, and is a great supplement to any phonics program you have, and can also work as a stand-alone reading online learning curriculum.
Upon the first login, your child will begin a placement test. This helps determine if the student can skip easier sections and get to work learning new things. It was quick and simple for Catie, and got her off to a great start. She began at Lesson 11 and really enjoyed the activities. Each lesson touches on several aspects of letters and sounds, with short little multi-media activities, and ends with an animal hatching out of an egg.
With each activity, the student earns “eggs,” which are points to use later. After several activities, the lesson ends with a short reader, and then a new “critter” is hatched.
Students have their own dashboard that looks like this:
Catie can navigate this on her own. She clicks on My Lessons to do more reading activities. At the bottom, she has a house to fill and decorate. THIS HOUSE IS THE KEY TO KEEPING HER MOTIVATED. With the eggs she earns, she is able to buy things to put in her house. When Catie found this out, she wanted to keep doing the Reading Eggs lessons!
(Reading Eggs reminds me of when my oldest children were young and played CD-ROM computer learning games, and also when they collected Webkinz dolls and played games at Webkinz.com. They loved earning points to buy things for their animal and its home.)
When she earns a bunch of new eggs, she can go to the shop and buy new things for her house and garden.
Catie also recognized the benefit in all this fun. She said, “Mom, I think this will help me to read better with all these games!”
Other Programs
In Reading Eggspress, students have a chance to put their reading skills to work in higher-level thinking activities. These test their knowledge of vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and study skills.
Mathseeds is a fun math supplement program for those learning to recognize numbers, count, and do very basic operations.
Reading Eggs Junior is a set of introductory preschool games for ages 2-4 that builds vocabulary and thinking skills while introducing colors, clothes, and all the basics in a fun game-setting.
In the Family Dashboard, there is a Bonus Materials section, which includes a User Guide for parents (very helpful for getting started), printable worksheets, and something brand new this week: a Homeschool Program Guide, which is a chart showing all of the skills your student will learn in grades K-2. This is so handy for the parent who needs to keep records or who likes to see a big overview of learned topics.
