When Mother Reads Aloud

Books, Christian Parenting Books, history, homeschool, Homeschool 101

When mother reads aloud, the past
Seems real as every day;
I hear the tramp of armies vast,
I see the spears and lances cast,
I join the trilling fray;
Brave knights and ladies fair and proud
I meet when mother reads aloud.

When Mother reads aloud, far lands
Seem very near and true;
I cross the desert’s gleaming sands,
Or hunt the jungle’s prowling bands,
Or sail the ocean blue.
Far heights, whose peaks the cold mists shrouds,
I scale when Mother reads aloud.

When Mother reads aloud, I long
For noble deeds to do-
To help the right, redress the wrong;
It seems so easy to be strong,
So simple to be true.
O, thick and fast the visions crowd
My eyes, when Mother reads aloud.

This poem beautifully describes our homeschool style. Reading great books together, on comfy couches and chairs, or on the living room floor, or sitting outside with a cool breeze, history comes alive and is the most exciting part of the school day. Heroes from history are the best heroes a kid could have.

See my book lists for tons of good read-aloud recommendations!

    It’s so important to read to and with our kids. I find that when I’m slack on the reading, Monkey Boy and I tend to struggle a bit more. When we’re reading a little every day, we struggle much less. Also, I have visions of reading longer more in-depth stories with him as he ages! 🙂

      It’s funny how a little time with Mom and a story every day makes the whole day so smooth! I’ve been reading with my kids forever, and yes, we read longer, greater books now. It’s so nice, and it’s something we all look forward to.

      I’d love to take credit for this, but I can’t! It’s just “anonymous.” But isn’t it wonderful!?

Our culture has become saturated in all forms of rebellion against God, not the least of which is the LGBT movement. No matter how you raise your children, they will be exposed. Children’s toys, cookies, candy, cereal, clothing lines, and cartoons have all become mouthpieces for sexual perversion. You would literally have to live in a bubble to keep your children from it, especially in June. We settle in for a comfortable 1 1/2 to 2 hours of reading to begin our school day. (See my previous post.) Sometimes it’s at 9:00, sometimes it’s as late as 11:00. Snacks are allowed (see the iced coffees?) because food makes kids happy. And I let them do a variety of quiet activities while I read. On this day, they chose mazes and intricate coloring. Oklahoma! Summer learning. https://www.instagram.com/p/CsbPJAwLQNd/ I spend all day with my kids. But I’m not a super mom or gifted with infinite patience. I don’t have it all together. I usually don’t even have some of it together. Here’s our morning routine right now: When our society moved children away from the home and into the schools, they had to recreate much of home life in an artificial fashion. April 1, 1853:
