Mark Twain’s Slang

Books, homeschool

When I was growing up, my mother would not allow slang in our house. My sister and I were careful to obey this. I am thankful. I think slang makes people sound dumber than they usually are. Sorry. I just do.

As an adult, I have never been tempted to use any of the catchy and popular sayings. I also instruct my children to avoid them.

So, I was reading The Prince and The Pauper by Mark Twain to my girls this week. Imagine my surprise when I came upon this sentence:

  • “A few minutes later the little Prince of Wales was garlanded with Tom’s fluttering odds and ends, and the little Prince of Pauperdom was tricked out in the gaudy plumage of royalty.”

Tricked out??? No way! This book was published in 1881!

I guess ‘tricked out’ has been recycled. I wonder what else has?

Mark Twain was all that and a bag of chips. Umm…sorry; couldn’t resist.

See what else we’ve been reading, and be sure to visit my other blog, Prairie Sense, which is completely based on good writing!

You could go on any vacation in America to see exciting sights and have a ton of fun with your family. Or you can go to the Ark Encounter and see exciting sights, have a ton of fun with your family, and build your faith and that of your children in immeasurable ways. Life with teens definitely changes the sweet, structured homeschool days you had when they were all littles. Different schedules and the need for more sleep can make family time almost impossible. If you want kids out of public education, get them ALL THE WAY out. Don’t keep the government involved with its funding. A strong biblical worldview is key to preventing Marxism. Preventing Marxist ideas in America is key to preserving life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. When you homeschool, the world is truly your classroom! Check out my newest homeschool t-shirt design, just in time for a new school year. The world is increasingly atheistic, and at the same time, increasingly hateful toward Christians and the Bible. You and your children will not be able to withstand this secular culture without being thoroughtly immersed in God's word. Many moms ask the question, "How do I homeschool with babies and toddlers?" This is the theme of Chapters 1 and 2 in Anyone Can Homeschool. You don't have to be a certified teacher. You don't have to set up a classroom in your home. You don't need the same curriculum. My first quarter of lesson plans for Mystery of History Volume TWO is up on the blog! This curriculum covers the early church and the Middle Ages and it is so good!
