Homeschool Co-op with the Church Schoolhouse

A couple of years ago, I was very intrigued by an email I received from SchoolhouseTeachers.com about an incredibly easy way to start a homeschool co-op in your church. It’s called the Church Schoolhouse, and it offers an open-and-go opportunity for churches to provide a Christian homeschool co-op to their communities! Here’s what got my attention:

• Churches use the existing courses offered by SchoolhouseTeachers.com (over 400!) to create a schedule for their co-op
• Each family has one shared membership to SchoolhouseTeachers.com to access the co-op classes
• Teachers have the curriculum and lesson plans already created for their use

I am a big believer in homeschool community, and my family has enjoyed our local co-op for over 20 years. Many families utilize an outside co-op like this for socialization, support, and for classes that they feel less than equipped to teach at home.

With the consistent growth of homeschooling in America, brand new families need the encouragement and support of their local church. I hear this every single day: “If only more churches would step up and assist families!” I can attest to the blessing of having multiple churches in a town that see this need and have risen to meet it, but I also hear stories all the time from families who have no church support, and where churches aren’t even willing to rent out their facilities for a few hours per week.

A Church Schoolhouse can help with the support and the logistics.

Whether you want to offer enrichment classes like Elementary Art, Editing Photos, Business Plan Creation, or Reader’s Theater, or you prefer to offer a solid day of core subjects like world history, algebra, writing, and science, the possibilities are almost endless. Check out the huge list of classes available here.

This is such an easy way to get started with a co-op in your church! All you need is the facility plus parents or church members to facilitate each class. I love how simple Schoolhouse Teachers has made this.
