My family was recently given the chance to review a really cool online program called Thinking Like an Engineer from Innovators Tribe. We found it be incredibly engaging, and perfect for our boys, ages 9 and 11.
I was excited to try this because my 9-year-old son is just wired to “think like an engineer.” He’s always inventing things with cardboard, duct tape, and batteries. So I wanted to give him exposure to the ideas behind everyday inventions and help him to understand how things work. This online course fit the bill perfectly!
Because it is so fun, I decided to include my 11-year-old in the lessons, as well. He’s the artistic type, but he’s also enjoying the lessons, too. And with the included 3D drawing software, I think he will be amazed to watch his drawings come to life on screen! (A subscription can be used with multiple students.)
The first lesson included an assignment on building a tower, as tall as possible, with just paper and tape. And only a prescribed amount! It was definitely a challenge! My boys watched the video together, and then worked separately on their towers. The results? Ha! Frustration, and realizing that (as the video said) great inventions take many tries.
The lessons are accessible at any time that fits your schedule. When a student logs in, they pick up right where they left off. There are printable guides and materials lists available. I like having these available to stay on top of the lesson. We had several delays and small emergencies in our home during the review process, so we have not advanced far into the course yet, but my boys (and I) are excited to see and try all of the exciting STEM activities!
