Learning about different cultures is most fun for children when they can relate to the children in those cultures. That’s why I love the series of books by Carole P. Roman called “If You Were Me and Lived In…”
The first book we reviewed, and LOVED, was “If You Were Me and Lived in China: A Child’s Introduction to Culture Around the World.” This was fun for our family, since I teach English online to Chinese children every day. My own kids have had the opportunity to talk for a minute or two with many of my Chinese students, so it was fun for them to read this book about their everyday lives. This book (and all in the series) show a child’s life in a fun, simple way that opens the door to each new culture.
A great companion book to this would be “If You Were Me and Lived in Ancient China: The Han Dynasty – An Introduction to Civilizations.” This one is next on my list. Whenever children are used to illustrate a time or a place, it brings it so much more to life for the children reading the book. There are several books in this series, including “IF You Were Me and Lived in Viking Europe” and “If You Were Me and Lived in Renaissance Italy.” This entire series is perfect for history through the ages!
